Overview

  • The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office Property Crimes Bureau has classified the incident as felony theft and is actively following up on leads.
  • An initial staff count suggested 37 of the hotel’s 40 peafowl were missing but law enforcement has confirmed at least six birds unaccounted for.
  • A hotel guest reported seeing two men load a peacock into a pickup truck last Saturday, prompting managers to install additional cameras.
  • Staff have issued public appeals for tips and received reports of possible sightings of the missing birds on nearby private properties.
  • Hotel officials fear the peacocks may have been taken for cockfighting or the exotic‐animal market given their valuation of $1,000 to $2,000 each.
