Overview
- Flipboard, the news reading app, is officially joining the fediverse, a collection of decentralized services running on the ActivityPub protocol.
- The company plans to become fully interoperable with Mastodon and other fediverse services, starting with about two dozen publishers whose content will be discoverable across the fediverse.
- By next month, all public Flipboard accounts are expected to be federated, allowing anyone on an ActivityPub-powered app to view their posts and interact with them.
- Starting in April, all fediverse content will also be available within the Flipboard app, enabling users to browse content shared to Mastodon, Pixelfed, PeerTube, and other fediverse apps.
- Flipboard CEO Mike McCue predicts that the momentum for the fediverse is so strong that even Twitter may ultimately end up supporting ActivityPub.
