Flights Resume at Milan Bergamo After Fatal Taxiway Breach

Investigators have launched a joint inquiry into perimeter security failures that allowed the man to reach a taxiing aircraft engine.

Overview

  • Flight operations resumed at around 12:00 p.m. local time after a two-hour suspension that grounded all arrivals and departures.
  • An unidentified man forced through a terminal door onto the taxiway and was sucked into the engine of a Volotea Airbus A319 bound for Asturias.
  • Nine flights were diverted to Bologna, Verona and Milan Malpensa and FlightRadar24 recorded 19 cancellations during the shutdown.
  • Rescue teams, firefighters and police cordoned off the scene before reopening the taxiway and runway once initial checks were complete.
  • SACBO and Italian authorities are reviewing perimeter security and operational protocols as delays and some cancellations continue.
