Flash Floods in Arunachal Kill Two as Search Continues for Three Missing

Monsoon cloudbursts have forced Ranganadi reservoir releases and raised the risk of further flooding and landslides downstream.

Overview

  • Rescuers recovered the body of 30-year-old Ballari Marak on Saturday, raising the confirmed death toll to two while three people remain missing and search operations entered their fourth day.
  • Teams from the NDRF, SDRF, district police and local volunteers are conducting raft and ground searches with IAF and state aviation helicopters deployed to airlift personnel and equipment to the damaged NEEPCO Colony.
  • The flash flood, triggered by a localized cloudburst and days of heavy rain, washed away or severely damaged dozens of houses in the NEEPCO Colony and nearby Possa and Pitapool areas and left relief camps sheltering displaced residents.
  • NEEPCO has begun releasing water from the Ranganadi Dam and suspended power generation as a precaution, prompting alerts for downstream river levels in Assam and increased monitoring of the Brahmaputra basin.
  • The IMD has issued red and orange warnings for several Arunachal districts for heavy to extremely heavy rain, which officials say could widen damage, hamper rescue access on blocked roads and raise further landslide risk.
