Flash Floods in Arunachal Kill Three and Leave Two Missing

Swollen mountain streams from heavy monsoon rain risk further downstream flooding, prompting intensified searches, transport halts, relief mobilization, federal support

Overview

  • A cloudburst-driven flash flood on June 24 struck Keyi Panyor (Poosa) in Arunachal Pradesh, destroying homes in the NEEPCO colony, confirming three deaths and leaving two people still missing.
  • Search-and-rescue teams from the NDRF, SDRF and local police, supported by Indian Air Force helicopter airlifts and specialised equipment, are continuing intensive operations in difficult, landslide-hit terrain.
  • The rains have spread downstream into Assam, where the Assam State Disaster Management Authority reports about 22,124 people affected across six districts and Dhemaji the hardest hit with roughly 15,483 people impacted.
  • Severe riverbank erosion in Dhemaji destabilised a pier of a 1965-built railway bridge, forcing suspension of train services on the Murkongselek–Silapathar section and interrupting passenger and freight links.
  • The India Meteorological Department has warned of more very heavy rainfall including localized 200 mm-plus totals, and officials say high inflows, reservoir releases and blocked roads could worsen flooding and slow relief work.
