Flash Flooding Forces Evacuations and Road Closures in Hurricane, Utah

Rain in Gould Wash created a sudden flood wave that flooded neighborhoods, prompted evacuations, closed highways, collapsed a rural road.

Overview

  • The National Weather Service said heavy, localized rain of 1 to 2 inches in Gould Wash headwaters produced a large flood wave that moved downstream through Hurricane on Thursday.
  • Hurricane police ordered residents at the Willow Wind RV Park and those along Gould Wash to evacuate, and medical personnel were staged for responders and displaced residents.
  • Emergency shelters opened at 272 South 700 West and a local stake center, offering refuge for people whose homes were inundated by fast-moving water.
  • Multiple roads closed because of flooding and debris, including State Route 24 between mileposts 81–86 and Kolob Terrace Road at SR-8, while Paiute Farms Road in Oljato collapsed and is not passable.
  • Officials from the NWS, UDOT, county sheriffs and local police are maintaining warnings and closures as crews assist residents and forecasts call for scattered showers that could prolong spotty flooding and travel disruptions.
