Flash Flood Warnings Stretch From New England to Texas as Slow-Moving Storms Drench Multiple States

The NWS reports up to five inches of rain in parts of Kentucky and Ohio, with confirmed flash flooding, urging drivers to avoid water-covered roads.

Overview

  • Active flash flood warnings covered parts of Massachusetts and Rhode Island, eastern Kentucky and southern Ohio, and Webb County, Texas, including the Laredo area.
  • Rain totals reached 3.5 to 5 inches in sections of Kentucky and Ohio with confirmed flash flooding in Flatwoods and Russell, Kentucky, and Ironton, Ohio, while 1 to 2 inches fell in southeastern Massachusetts with heavier rates possible.
  • In Michigan, Washtenaw County was under a flash flood warning after Doppler estimates of 1 to 4 inches, and a flood watch was posted for Oakland, Macomb, and Wayne counties.
  • Severe storm hazards accompanied the flooding risk, including a warning for Adams County, Pennsylvania, for 60 mph winds and penny-size hail and a Southeast Alabama alert for strong storms producing 40 mph gusts and torrential rain.
  • The Weather Service emphasized “Turn around, don’t drown,” noting most flood deaths occur in vehicles and urging reports of flooding only when it is safe to do so.
