Flaming Lips Announce The Teardrop Throbs on Third Man Records

The January release returns the band to an indie label for the first time since 1990 and signals a new creative chapter for Wayne Coyne’s group.

Overview

  • The Flaming Lips announced a 13-track album called The Teardrop Throbs and a Jan. 22, 2027 release date, and they released lead single “God Will Control The Werewolves” in the announcement, which was published Monday.
  • The record will be issued on Jack White’s Third Man Records, marking the band’s first studio release outside Warner since 1990 and a shift in their distribution and label partnerships.
  • Longtime multi-instrumentalist Steven Drozd is not part of the album, and public statements remain in conflict with Drozd saying he was effectively fired after entering addiction treatment and Wayne Coyne disputing Drozd’s account.
  • The album credits list production by the band with Taylor Johnson, Dave Fridmann and Scott Booker plus additional Fridmann work, and Coyne says parenthood and mortality shaped songs whose titles include “Throb,” “You’ve Got Brain Damage,” and “Ego Tripping At The Gates Of Hell Part Two.”
  • To promote the release the band will play intimate two-night stands in Nashville, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and London that pair full-album performances with era-based or reimagined sets, with artist presales beginning Oct. 28 and general on-sale Oct. 30.
