Flamengo Files Disciplinary Complaint That Could Alter Copa Libertadores Final

A CONMEBOL disciplinary case challenges a provisional CAS clearance for Marcos Rojo and, if upheld, would replace the on-field result and change the Nov. 28 final matchup.

Overview

  • Flamengo lodged a formal complaint with CONMEBOL on Saturday, Oct. 24, asking for a 3–0 administrative victory over Estudiantes on the grounds that Marcos Rojo was irregularly registered.
  • The defender played after the Tribunal Arbitral do Esporte (CAS) granted a provisional measure on Oct. 21 that allowed Estudiantes to register Rojo despite CONMEBOL’s earlier refusals.
  • CONMEBOL had rejected Estudiantes’ registration request on Oct. 14–15 after consulting FIFA, which said national transfer-window rules applied, and those refusals form the factual basis of Flamengo’s protest.
  • Estudiantes remains provisionally qualified for the Nov. 28 final in Montevideo and has a defense deadline set by CONMEBOL for Oct. 26, while a reported CAS hearing on Nov. 12 could further shape the dispute.
  • The case puts sporting integrity and timing under strain because CONMEBOL’s disciplinary code can retroactively award a 3–0 result, which would swap finalists, and the CAS injunction does not by itself remove later disciplinary consequences.
