Flamengo Ends Canoeing and Paralympic Rowing, Parts With Olympic Champion Isaquias Queiroz

The club framed the move as a shift toward permanent Rio-based structures focused on developing local talent.

Overview

  • On Monday, the club announced it would no longer field a canoeing team and formally closed its pararemo program, releasing the athletes in both squads.
  • Flamengo said key canoeists live and train outside Rio de Janeiro, which the club argues prevents building a structured base and pipeline of new athletes.
  • The released canoeing roster included Isaquias Queiroz along with Gabriel Assunção, Mateus dos Santos, Valdenice do Nascimento and Roberto Maehler.
  • The paralympic rowing lineup was also released, naming Michel Pessanha, Gessyca Guerra, Diana Barcellos and Valdenir Junior.
  • Flamengo highlighted Queiroz’s five Olympic medals and noted he wore the club’s jersey for about seven years in his latest stint while publicly thanking all the athletes.
