Flagler County Teen Charged as Adult After Traffic-Stop Rescue of Missing 11-Year-Old

Adult charges follow a violent pursuit captured on deputies’ video.

Overview

  • The 15-year-old now faces first-degree felonies for aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer and aggravated fleeing and eluding, plus felony grand theft of a motor vehicle and three misdemeanors.
  • He was transferred to the Volusia County Branch Jail and is being held on $133,000 bond following his first court appearance.
  • Deputies stopped a truck on Dec. 31, rescued an 11-year-old reported missing for three days, and arrested 60-year-old registered sex offender Darnell Hairston.
  • Investigators say the teen fled in the truck during the stop, rammed a deputy’s cruiser, crashed, and was recorded on body camera saying “pull the trigger” before surrendering.
  • Hairston remains jailed without bond on charges including kidnapping, aggravated child abuse, robbery with a firearm, and battery by strangulation, with an arraignment set for Jan. 27 as detectives probe possible co-conspiracy.
