Five-Year-Old With Rare Inoperable Brain Tumour Back at School as Chemotherapy Continues

Doctors diagnosed a paediatric bithalamic glioma in January with a nine to 12 month prognosis.

Overview

  • Rosie began radiotherapy with oral chemotherapy at The Christie on February 26, completed six weeks, and is now in her fifth cycle of chemotherapy.
  • A June MRI showed the tumour was stable, which her mother called a small victory despite no shrinkage.
  • She has returned for short sessions at school and took part in her sports day in July.
  • The family is fundraising during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month with Brain Tumour Research, supported by a donation from MP Siobhain McDonagh.
  • Initial symptoms in November 2024 were treated as headaches before an MRI on December 22 found the tumour; her eight-year-old brother has since developed a stress-linked chronic tic.
