Five Wavertree Care Home Workers on Trial Over Alleged Abuse of 85-Year-Old

Prosecutors are relying on CCTV footage that they say captures degrading treatment of a vulnerable dementia patient.

Overview

  • The case opened at Liverpool Crown Court with prosecutor Jonathan Rogers describing video of prodding, pushing, waving a backside in the resident’s face and placing underpants on her head.
  • The 85-year-old resident had dementia and learning difficulties and was under the Court of Protection due to lacking capacity.
  • William Vasey, Wendy Shelley and Josh Ireland are charged with ill treatment, while Ireland, Valerie Marshall and Adelle McIlhatton face counts of wilful neglect for failing to intervene.
  • Vasey told police he was just messing and used the knickers to keep hair rollers in place, Shelley called her actions a bit of fun after an insult, and Ireland admitted laughing and not stopping the behavior.
  • A kitchen staff member reported the resident was clearly upset and distressed, with the case before Judge Katherine Pierpoint and expected to last about five days.
