Five Victims Identified in Gary Train-SUV Collision as Investigation Continues

Authorities are working to determine how the vehicle bypassed active crossing gates before being struck by a South Shore Line train

Overview

  • Authorities have named the five victims as 20-year-olds Maurice Parrish, Sherise Parrish and Latianna King, 21-year-old Byron Towns and 24-year-old De’Mario Craig
  • The crash occurred just after 10 p.m. on June 25 near the intersection of U.S. Route 20 and Utah Street when the SUV went around active crossing gates
  • All five occupants of the SUV were ejected and pronounced dead at the scene, while none of the 32 train passengers or crew were injured
  • South Shore Line service was temporarily suspended following the collision and has since resumed normal operations
  • The Gary Police Department and NICTD Transit Police are jointly investigating the circumstances and have notified the victims’ families
