Five Tourists Dead, Four Rescued After Extreme Storm on Torres del Paine ‘O’ Circuit

Evacuations proceed under a prosecutor-led inquiry into the deadly storm incident.

Overview

  • Authorities confirmed the fatalities as two Mexicans, two Germans and one Briton, and said the remaining four members of the group were found alive.
  • The victims were identified as Cristina Calvillo Tovar and Julián García Pimentel of Mexico, Victoria Bond of the United Kingdom, and Germans Nadine Lichey and Andreas Von Pein.
  • Gusts near 190–193 km/h and heavy snowfall struck the Los Perros–Paso John Gardner sector, creating whiteout conditions and halting early aerial support.
  • CONAF closed parts of the Macizo Paine/O circuit as Carabineros, the Army, Socorro Andino and park teams led a ground search that located the bodies near Campamento Los Perros.
  • With the search concluded, helicopters are being used to evacuate the bodies as weather allows, consular repatriations are in motion, and President Gabriel Boric offered condolences.
