Five-Time Olympic Gold Medalist Caeleb Dressel Fails to Qualify for World Swimming Championships

Caeleb Dressel, who won five gold medals at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, did not earn a spot on the U.S. team for the world swimming championships.
Dressel struggled in his return to competition after taking time off and finished tied for 22nd in the 50-meter freestyle preliminaries at the U.S. national championships.
Though Dressel competed in the "C" final of the 50 and 100 free, he did not advance to the main final in any event.
Dressel's failure to qualify for the world championships is a stunning outcome for one of the sport's biggest stars and most dominant athletes in recent years.
Dressel's coach said Dressel seemed to rediscover his joy of competition at nationals, though his path to again being considered the world's top swimmer is just beginning.
