Five Spanish Regions Move Oct. 12 Holiday to Monday as Most Work Oct. 13

Autonomous governments use a legal option to shift Sunday’s festivity, creating uneven schedules for families and employers.

Overview

  • Andalucía, Aragón, Asturias, Castilla y León and Extremadura will observe Monday, Oct. 13, 2025, as a public holiday after transferring the Día de la Hispanidad from Sunday.
  • In the rest of the country—including Catalunya, the Community of Madrid, the Valencian Community and Galicia—Monday remains a normal working day.
  • Murcia confirmed via the BOE on Jan. 1 that it would keep the Oct. 12 festivity on Sunday, having already swapped that observance for March 19 (San José) in its 2025 calendar.
  • Spanish rules under Real Decreto 2001/1983 and the Workers’ Statute allow—but do not require—regions to move a national holiday that falls on a Sunday to the following Monday.
  • With Nov. 1 and Dec. 6 landing on Saturday and not recoverable nationally, the next nationwide weekday holiday is Monday, Dec. 8 (Immaculate Conception), so residents should check regional bulletins for local variations.
