Five Spanish Regions Move Oct. 12 Holiday to Monday After 2025 Date Falls on Sunday

The BOE confirms the Fiesta Nacional is a non‑substitutable holiday, leaving Galicia without a long weekend.

Overview

  • According to the BOE, Andalucía, Aragón, Asturias, Castilla y León and Extremadura transfer the non‑working day to Monday, 13 October 2025.
  • Galicia does not shift the observance, so Sunday remains the only public holiday there for the Fiesta Nacional.
  • Castilla y León included Monday, 13 October in its 2025 labour calendar approved by the regional government on 19 September 2024.
  • Despite the non‑working declaration in Castilla y León, major retail in Valladolid such as RÍO Shopping, Vallsur, El Corte Inglés, Carrefour and Hipercor will open on the 13th with special or regular hours.
  • The 12 October holiday is defined by Law 18/1987 and traces back to a 1918 observance commemorating Columbus's 1492 voyage.
