Five Soldiers Wounded at Fort Stewart; Suspect Identified as Army Sgt.

A joint CID probe with support from the FBI’s Savannah office was launched following the swift detention of Sgt. Quornelius Radford.

Overview

  • Five soldiers were shot around 11 a.m. within the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area at Fort Stewart and received emergency care on site before transfer to Winn Army Community Hospital and Savannah’s Memorial Health University Medical Center.
  • Fellow troops subdued the assailant and military police arrested 28-year-old Sgt. Quornelius Radford at 11:35 a.m. after he opened fire in his unit’s workplace.
  • Brig. Gen. John Lubas reported that three of the wounded required surgery and all five are now stable and expected to recover.
  • Fort Stewart locked down its gates and nearby Liberty County schools issued shelter-in-place orders, lifting all restrictions about an hour later after declaring the base secure.
  • Investigators from the Army Criminal Investigation Division, aided by the FBI’s Savannah office, say a personal handgun was used and are working to determine the motive behind the attack.
