Five Rare Assamese Manuscripts Join Rashtrapati Bhavan Library Collection
The transfer secures federal conservation of Assam’s literary treasures for preservation with a view to future exhibition.
Overview
- The Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra Society formally handed over the five palm-leaf sanchipat manuscripts on July 22 in New Delhi, with Secretary Sudarshan Thakur presenting them to Rashtrapati Bhavan Secretary Dipti Umashankar.
- The donation includes Srimanta Sankardeva’s Kirtan Ghosha and Adi Dasham, Madhavdeva’s Nam Ghoxa and Bhakti Ratnavali, and an Assamese translation of Jayadeva’s Geet Govinda by Kabiraj Chakravarti.
- Kalakshetra officials coordinated with Vaishnavite Satras in Majuli, Morigaon, Titabor and Jorhat to gather the manuscripts from local satradhikars and community custodians.
- Sudarshan Thakur said the federal endorsement is expected to invigorate the Assamese language’s literary and cultural heritage at a national level.
- The Rashtrapati Bhavan Library will conserve the fragile documents under enhanced federal care and plans to display them publicly in a forthcoming exhibition.
