Five Naga Tribes Stage Sit-In at Nagaland Civil Secretariat

Tribal leaders demand repeal or reallocation of unfilled reservation posts; the government says reforms must wait for the 2027 census

Overview

  • On July 9, thousands from the Ao, Angami, Lotha, Rengma and Sumi communities staged a sit-in at the Civil Secretariat in Kohima to press for policy review
  • The 5-Tribes Committee on Review of Reservation Policy is calling for either scrapping the 1977 job quota or dedicating unfilled reserved positions to its member tribes
  • Nagaland’s state government has appealed to the committee to end the protest, saying the issue is under institutional review and a commission will decide next steps
  • Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has linked any changes in reservations or administrative boundaries to the findings of a commission and the results of the 2027 national census
  • CoRRP has warned that protests will escalate further if the promised commission is not formally established and empowered without delay
