Overview

  • On July 21, the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall covers roughly 5 million above-ground pools sold since 2002 under brands including Bestway, Coleman, Intel and Polygroup.
  • The compression straps on pools 48 inches and taller allowed toddlers aged 22 months to three years to climb in unattended, leading to nine drownings between 2007 and 2022.
  • Three additional near-drowning incidents linked to the straps were reported in 2011 and 2012, prompting regulators to require a comprehensive repair solution.
  • Pool owners in the U.S. and approximately 266,000 in Canada are urged to contact manufacturers for free kits that install safety ropes and to secure or drain pools until repairs are complete.
  • Major retailers such as Walmart, Target, Sears, Kmart, Lowe’s, Toys “R” Us and online sellers including Amazon have been notified and have halted sales of the affected models.
