Five Killed in Medical-Rescue Helicopter Crash on Mount Kilimanjaro

Tanzania’s aviation regulator has begun an investigation into the high-altitude accident near Barafu Camp.

Overview

  • The helicopter went down on Christmas Eve between Barafu Camp and Kibo Summit at roughly 4,700 metres on the mountain’s upper slopes.
  • Police said the flight was a medical evacuation mission to pick up patients on one of Kilimanjaro’s busiest climbing routes.
  • Authorities reported the victims as two foreign climbers, a local doctor, a mountain guide and the pilot.
  • The Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority said an inquiry has started under international safety standards to determine the cause.
  • Regional police named Kilimanjaro Aviation as the operator, while local outlets reported the foreigners may be Czech and a Zimbabwean was on board, with identities still being confirmed.
