Five Killed, Dozens Injured in New York Thruway Tour Bus Rollover

Investigators point to driver distraction as the likely cause.

Overview

  • The Aug. 22 crash occurred on I-90 near Pembroke as a New York City–bound bus returned from Niagara Falls with 52 to 54 people aboard.
  • State police ruled out mechanical failure and operator impairment; the driver survived, is cooperating with investigators, and no charges have been announced.
  • Authorities said many passengers were ejected or trapped and appeared not to be wearing seat belts, with more than 40 patients treated at regional hospitals and multiple medevac helicopters deployed.
  • Most passengers were visitors from India, China and the Philippines, prompting use of translators, consular outreach, and a family assistance center for survivors and relatives.
  • Officials identified the operator as M&Y Tour Inc., and the NTSB has opened a safety investigation; state police released the names of the five adults killed: Shankar Kumar Jha, Pinki Changrani, Xie Hongzhuo, Zhang Xiaolan and Jian Mingli.
