Five, Including Three Children, Killed in Three-Vehicle Crash on Colorado’s Highway 83

The state’s Vehicular Crimes Unit is investigating why a Toyota crossed into northbound lanes.

Overview

  • Authorities say the crash occurred around 4:39 p.m. Monday near South Russellville Road on Highway 83 and involved a Toyota hatchback, a Ford sedan and a Ford pickup.
  • Colorado State Patrol reports the southbound Toyota went off the right shoulder, returned to the roadway, rolled into the northbound lane and ejected its driver, who died at the scene.
  • The Toyota struck the northbound Ford sedan head-on, killing the adult driver and three of the five juveniles riding in that car.
  • Two other juveniles from the Ford were airlifted to hospitals with serious injuries, and the driver of the pickup was not hurt.
  • Highway 83 was closed for hours for investigation and cleanup, and the Douglas County coroner will release names after notifying families.
