Overview
- A group gathered at the O’Shaughnessy Reservoir went to the Scioto River Sunday night when one adult began struggling and successive untrained rescue attempts by others led to five adults drowning after a child ran to the road for help.
- First responders pulled two women from the water Sunday and took them to hospitals where they were pronounced dead, and search teams recovered the bodies of three men the following afternoon.
- Honduran authorities confirmed four of the five victims are two married Honduran couples and said they are working with U.S. officials to repatriate the bodies once identifications are complete.
- Two children, reported to be under age 10, were placed in the care of Delaware County Job & Family Services and Honduran officials say they will assist with family reunification.
- Officials and multiple local agencies noted USGS data showed unusually high river flows of about 350 cubic feet per second on the day of the incident and said the investigation is ongoing with no cause, including alcohol, yet determined.
