Five Detained in Islamic Terror Plot to Attack Cologne Cathedral

Suspects Allegedly Linked to Extensive Terror Network Across Germany and Europe

German authorities have detained five individuals over a suspected Islamic terror plot to blow up the Cologne Cathedral on New Year’s Eve.
The suspects are allegedly affiliated with IS-Khorasan, an offshoot of the so-called 'Islamic State' group in Afghanistan.
The alleged plot involved a car loaded with explosives targeting the cathedral.
Cologne police said that the individuals detained were not plotting alone but linked to a terror network that operates throughout Germany and Europe.
The city’s world-famous cathedral has been under high protection for a week and the threat led to the closure of the house of worship for tourists since Christmas Eve.
