Five Dead, Two Injured in Salzburg Avalanches

Rescue officials blame unstable snow left by last week’s heavy snowfall.

Overview

  • An off-piste avalanche on the Finsterkopf in the Großarl Valley buried six skiers, leaving four dead, one seriously injured and one slightly injured.
  • An earlier slide at the Schmugglerscharte in Bad Hofgastein buried a woman who later died despite resuscitation attempts.
  • Around 90 rescuers and four helicopters were deployed across the operations, according to Salzburg mountain rescue teams.
  • Authorities had issued repeated avalanche warnings, and district manager Gerhard Kremser cautioned against venturing into hazardous terrain.
  • Additional avalanches were reported in Hüttschlag and on the Frauenkogel near Großarl with no injuries.
