Five Dead, Including Three Children, After Stolen Toyota Crashes on Colorado’s Highway 83

State troopers have opened a vehicular crimes investigation after confirming the Toyota was reported stolen about an hour earlier.

Overview

  • CSP says a southbound Toyota lost control near Russellville Road, rolled into the northbound lane and struck a Ford Fusion head-on.
  • The Ford’s 35-year-old driver and children ages 8, 12 and 12 died at the scene, while a 13-year-old girl and 14-year-old boy were airlifted with life-threatening injuries.
  • The Toyota’s 31-year-old Denver driver was ejected and died, and he was not believed to be wearing a seat belt.
  • The Toyota had been reported stolen from Aurora’s Nine Mile Station about an hour before the crash, and investigators have not confirmed whether the driver was the carjacking suspect.
  • CSP’s Vehicular Crimes Unit is leading the probe, noting four children were unbelted in the Ford’s back seat as Highway 83 was closed for hours and later reopened.
