Five Convicted in New Mexico for Kidnapping, Terror Plot Involving Death of Georgia Boy

Convicted individuals were family members planning a militant strike against US government institutions and subjecting their victim to deadly "spiritual exorcisms"; verdict follows three-week trial and extensive investigation into the 2018 case.

  • Siraj Ibn Wahhaj, his sisters Hujrah Wahhaj and Subhanah Wahhaj, Subhanah's husband, Lucas Morton, and Jany Leveille were convicted in connection with a plot involving kidnapping, terrorism, and the death of Wahhaj's three-year-old son, Abdul Ghani.
  • The group believed Abdul Ghani was possessed by demons and subjected him to regular 'spiritual exorcisms', depriving him of needed anti-seizure medication; the boy died less than two weeks after being brought to the compound in New Mexico.
  • The group had created a fortified base and firing range, and conducted weapons and tactical training sessions in preparation to launch alleged terrorist attacks against the U.S., particularly targeting perceived corrupt government and financial institutions.
  • Compelled by the belief that after his death, Abdul Ghani would return as Jesus Christ to judge these institutions, the group was reportedly prepared to wage jihad and become martyrs for their cause.
  • All defendants were arrested in a raid on August 3, 2018, and remain in custody pending sentencing; Siraj, Hujrah, Subhanah, and Morton could each face life imprisonment, while Leveille faces a maximum sentence of 17 years.
