Overview

• Responders were called to Child Care Plus Learning Center in Coventry around 4:46 p.m. Monday, where five children ages 7 and 8 were taken to Hasbro Children’s Hospital and Kent Hospital.
• Police say the vehicle hit large boulders before breaking through the playground fence, and fence pieces and toys likely caused the children’s scrapes and bruises.
• The driver, identified by the day care’s owners as an employee who was leaving with her two children, remained at the scene, cooperated with investigators, and passed a field sobriety test.
• Detectives say the cause of the crash is still under investigation, and no charges have been announced.
• The day care reopened Tuesday with the playground closed for repairs as a local business fixed the fence and plans additional protective bollards.
