Five Buxton Beach Houses Collapse Into Atlantic Within 45 Minutes

Rough surf from Humberto and Imelda forced closures after hazardous debris spread along the shore.

Overview

  • Collapses occurred between about 2:00 and 2:45 p.m. local time with no injuries reported, according to the National Park Service.
  • The affected homes were at 46001, 46002 and 46007 Cottage Avenue, and 46209 and 46211 Tower Circle Road.
  • Cape Hatteras National Seashore closed the oceanfront from northern Buxton to ORV ramp 43 and warned that debris may travel for miles.
  • NCDOT shut a section of NC Highway 12 on Ocracoke Island because of ocean overwash, and the Ocracoke–Hatteras ferry was suspended.
  • The day’s losses raise the total to 17 houses collapsed on seashore beaches since 2020 as chronic erosion and higher seas continue to threaten oceanfront structures.
