Five Arrested in LA in Alleged Murder-for-Hire Plot Targeting Armenian Crime Boss

Prosecutors say the case stems from a power struggle inside a transnational Armenian network using local gangs as enforcers.

Overview

  • Four suspects tied to the Vanowen Street Locos and Elmwood Rifa 13 are charged with using interstate commerce facilities to commit murder-for-hire targeting Robert Amiryan.
  • Carlos Armando Ochoa Grimaldi, Christopher Ayala, Edir De La Cruz and Maria de Jesus Mares were identified as the alleged participants in the plot.
  • Prosecutors allege the group stalked Amiryan before his partner was shot and wounded on March 14 as she arrived home with their two children.
  • A fifth suspect, Jose de Jesus Gonzalez Jr., was arrested in a separate case and faces a RICO conspiracy charge linked to a 2023 shooting of Vahan Harutyunyan.
  • Agents serving search warrants seized five firearms, a silencer, firearm parts and more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition, and officials say all defendants remain in custody facing up to 20 years if convicted, with trials for rival leaders set in December 2025 and August 2026.
