Five Arrested in Gujarat for Beating Orchard Labourer to Death Over Mango Theft

Police accuse the leaseholder with four accomplices of beating the labourer over alleged theft of mangoes worth Rs 50,000 before dumping his body in a canal.

  • Police took Ashfak Rayan, Vinod Agrawal, Mohammed Umar Munihar, Dashrath Maurya and Yakub Abdul Gaffar into custody on June 1 and have filed murder and related charges.
  • Victim Suresh Verma, a 48-year-old labourer from Uttar Pradesh, was tied to a tree and beaten unconscious on the night of May 21 in Bardoli taluka.
  • After the assault, the accused demanded Rs 50,000 ransom from Verma’s wife before driving his body to a canal in Kamrej taluka and disposing of it there.
  • Verma’s son filed a missing person complaint on May 25, leading police to identify the recovered body, which had already been cremated by Kamrej authorities.
  • Authorities have obtained confessions from the five arrested suspects and are still searching for another labourer, Ajay Banwasi, who escaped the scene.
