Fisherman Dies After Boat Capsizes Off Bare Island

Police say a sudden large wave flipped the small craft and investigators are urging anyone with footage to come forward as the only survivor receives hospital care.

Overview

  • A small fishing boat was struck and overturned by a large, localized wave about 10 metres offshore on Sunday morning, throwing two men into the water.
  • Civilian rescuers on a jet ski and recreational divers recovered one man, aged 74, who was treated by paramedics and taken to Prince of Wales Hospital in a stable condition.
  • The other man was winched from the sea by the Westpac Lifesaver rescue helicopter, given CPR by paramedics at an Anzac Parade landing site, and was declared dead at the scene.
  • Police say the men were believed not to be wearing lifejackets and the vessel was extensively damaged and broken up by the wave; officers have asked witnesses and anyone with dashcam or phone footage to contact Maroubra police station or Crime Stoppers.
  • Authorities warned boaters about a nearby bombora — a shallow reef that can create sudden breaking waves — and used the incident to reinforce advice to wear lifejackets and check local sea conditions before going out.
