First Track on Portal North Bridge Opens, Restoring Normal NJ Transit Service

The cutover milestone begins the shift off the 116-year-old swing span to a fixed crossing built for greater reliability.

Overview

  • One track on the new Portal North Bridge entered passenger service Monday, with NJ Transit returning to regular weekday schedules after weeks of disruptions.
  • Regular service resumed Sunday following completion of the first phase of the cutover that transfers rail operations from the old Portal Bridge.
  • An overhead wire failure on the old span late last week forced severe delays and briefly routed some trains over the new bridge early, and officials say the issue has been fixed.
  • Officials say the new crossing is a key Gateway Program upgrade intended to improve reliability and capacity on the shared NJ Transit–Amtrak corridor.
  • Work to move the second track to the new bridge is scheduled to start in the fall, after which the old Portal Bridge is slated for demolition.
