First Survey in Kaziranga Finds 283 Insect and Spider Species

Officials call it a baseline to guide insect-focused conservation under climate pressure.

Overview

  • The tally includes 254 insects and 29 spiders documented in a rapid assessment of a woodland habitat.
  • Group counts reported 85 butterflies and moths, 40 ants, bees and wasps, and 35 beetles.
  • Entomologists with The Corbett Foundation led the work with Kaziranga’s forest staff on the Panbari Reserve Forest track under the Eastern Assam Wildlife Division.
  • The report and information booklets were released on September 26 by MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, MLA Mrinal Saikia and Principal Chief Conservator of Forest Vinay Gupta.
  • Park leaders say the data highlights the roles of pollinators, soil aerators and natural pest controllers, noting wider evidence that nearly 40% of insect species are declining due to habitat loss, deforestation and climate change.
