First September Social Security Checks Arrive Sept. 10 for Birthdays 1–10

Some beneficiaries will see smaller checks due to 50% withholdings for overpayment recovery.

Overview

  • Subsequent September payments are set for Sept. 17 for birthdays 11–20 and Sept. 24 for birthdays 21–31, following the SSA’s staggered schedule.
  • The next SSI payment is scheduled for Oct. 1, with the November SSI check advanced to Oct. 31 because Nov. 1 falls on a weekend.
  • Maximum 2025 retirement benefits are $2,831 at age 62, $4,018 at full retirement age, and $5,108 at age 70, with actual amounts based on lifetime earnings.
  • The SSA began issuing overpayment notices on April 25 and is recouping past overpayments by withholding up to half of affected recipients’ monthly benefits after roughly 90 days.
  • Social Security pays more than 74 million Americans, and The Senior Citizens League estimates the 2026 cost‑of‑living adjustment at about 2.7%.
