First Recorded Snowfall at Mexico’s Cofre de Perote as Veracruz Braces for Powerful ‘Norte’ and Heavy Rains

Officials say the rare mountain event foreshadows a multi-day threat along the Gulf coast.

Overview

  • CONAGUA confirmed that snow fell overnight on December 25–26 at Cofre de Perote, marking the first recorded snowfall in that area of Veracruz.
  • Veracruz civil protection urged precautions including dressing in layers, protecting children and older adults, securing roofs and loose objects, avoiding indoor braziers, safeguarding pets and crops, and driving carefully in mountain zones.
  • State forecasters expect strong to very strong storms on Monday and Tuesday, with frequent lightning, hazardous wind gusts and local rainfall totals of 70–150 millimeters.
  • A pronounced Norte is forecast with gusts of 95–110 km/h on the central coast, 85–100 km/h on the north and south coasts, and 45–60 km/h inland around Xalapa, Naolinco, Misantla and the Perote valley, likely producing 4–6 meter waves.
  • The national meteorological service projects Cold Front No. 24 will affect the northwest and north on December 27–28 with colder air, wind, rain and a chance of snow or sleet in the sierras of Chihuahua and Durango, with Veracruz temperatures then forecast to drop sharply Tuesday–Wednesday and frosts likely in high areas.
