By reducing travel time to about 30 hours, the service is designed to lower per-kilo shipping costs for fruit growers in Jammu and Kashmir.

Overview

  • The inaugural parcel train carrying 24 tonnes of cherries left Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra station on May 31 bound for Mumbai’s Bandra Terminus.
  • The train is expected to reach Mumbai in about 30 hours, significantly faster than road transport.
  • Northern Railway’s Jammu division coordinated with local fruit growers associations and the J&K Horticulture Department to launch the perishable-goods service.
  • Two additional cherry consignments are slated for loading at Katra and Jammu stations in the coming days to expand the rail transport trial.
  • Growers say the initiative could boost the region’s economy and are urging completion of a direct rail link to Kashmir to streamline future exports.
