First October Social Security Payments Arrive Wednesday Under Paperless Policy

Funding from dedicated trust funds keeps payments going during the federal shutdown.

Overview

  • Beneficiaries with birthdays on the 1st through 10th are scheduled to be paid on Wednesday, Oct. 8, per the SSA calendar.
  • Later October waves are set for Oct. 15 for those born on the 11th–20th and Oct. 22 for those born on the 21st–31st, with some pre‑May 1997 recipients paid on the 3rd of the month.
  • Supplemental Security Income was issued on Oct. 1, the first business day of the month, following the standard SSI schedule.
  • October marks the first month under the SSA’s paperless policy requiring direct deposit or a Direct Express card, following a March executive order and a Sept. 30 compliance deadline.
  • Benefit disbursements are continuing during the shutdown because Social Security is funded by payroll‑tax trust funds, though service responses may slow, and recipients are advised to wait three business days before reporting a missing payment.
