First New DLR Train Enters Service, Starting Two-Year Fleet Upgrade

TfL plans a phased rollout to replace 30-year-old trains, lifting capacity by more than half by 2026.

Overview

  • The first of 54 new Docklands Light Railway trains began carrying passengers on October 1 after months of testing delays.
  • The launch follows a reduced timetable introduced in June when the oldest units were withdrawn ahead of replacement approval.
  • Each five-car, walk-through train provides air conditioning, real-time travel information, USB charging, three multi-use areas and three dedicated wheelchair spaces.
  • TfL expects to restore the full timetable as more trains enter service, with the older fleet fully replaced by the end of 2026 and overall capacity rising by more than 50%.
  • The upgrade is supported by £260 million from the Housing Infrastructure Fund, a £500 million National Wealth Fund loan and a £5 million contribution from London City Airport, with a proposed extension from Gallions Reach to Thamesmead in development.
