First Native Plants Installed on 101 Freeway Wildlife Crossing in Agoura Hills

The milestone launches habitat installation using hyper‑local plants grown from 1.1 million seeds in specially engineered soil.

Overview

  • Roughly 5,000 native plants will form a nearly one‑acre habitat across the main span that covers all 10 lanes of the 101 Freeway.
  • Plant stock was sourced within about five miles by a dedicated nursery team that hand‑collected more than 1.1 million seeds over four years.
  • About 6,000 cubic yards of engineered soil—composed of compost, branches and leaf litter—was installed in March and April to support the vegetation and mimic surrounding hillsides.
  • Construction also continues on an equally wide span over Agoura Road, which has required burying high‑voltage lines, moving telecom infrastructure and rerouting a regional waterline.
  • Officials now expect completion in 2026 after weather‑related delays, with the public‑private project budgeted at about $92 million.
