Overview
- Ontario is battling one of its largest wildfire seasons with more than 7,250 square kilometres burned and roughly 180 to 190 active fires across the north.
- Firefighting resources include about 155 ground crews, dozens of water‑bombing aircraft and Canadian Armed Forces support while dozens of fires remain uncontrolled.
- More than a dozen First Nations have been evacuated and thousands of people are displaced with Namaygoosisagagun (Collins) and Whitewater Lake reported destroyed.
- First Nations leaders held a July 21 news conference in Thunder Bay calling for a public inquiry, the removal of senior MNR leaders and a transfer of some wildfire responsibilities to the Ministry of Emergency Preparedness.
- The crisis followed a July 13–14 lightning event and extreme fire weather that drove rapid fire growth and has reignited calls to restore Indigenous fire stewardship, invest in early warning and overhaul evacuation planning for road‑isolated communities.
