First Men Invited as UK Launches £42 Million Transform Trial for Prostate Cancer Screening

Findings are intended to inform a national screening decision by testing newer methods against current NHS diagnostics.

Overview

  • GP invitations have begun for men aged 50 to 74, or 45 to 74 for higher‑risk groups, with initial testing underway at the InHealth centre in Ealing.
  • Phase one will enroll around 16,000 participants to compare PSA blood tests, genetic testing and a rapid MRI prostagram with existing diagnostic pathways.
  • A second stage could expand to as many as 300,000 men to validate the most promising options emerging from the first phase.
  • The £42 million study is funded by £16 million from the NIHR with the remaining support from Prostate Cancer UK.
  • Trial leaders aim to reduce diagnostic inequalities with a commitment that at least 10% of invited participants will be Black men, while the UK National Screening Committee considers whether evidence supports a screening programme.
