First Koala Babies Born at Stuttgart's Wilhelma Zoo
Two baby koalas, born in June, make history as the first of their kind in South Germany's Wilhelma Zoo.
- The two koala joeys, born to mothers Scar and Auburn, are the first koala offspring at Stuttgart's Wilhelma Zoo since its koala habitat opened in July 2023.
- The father, a six-year-old male named Aero, successfully mated with both female koalas in May 2024, resulting in the births after a 35-day gestation period.
- At birth, the joeys were the size of gummy bears and have since grown enough to occasionally peek out from their mothers' pouches.
- Wilhelma Zoo delayed announcing the births to ensure the joeys had a peaceful environment for early development.
- Koalas are rare in German zoos, with only four facilities, including Stuttgart, housing the species due to their demanding diet of specific eucalyptus varieties.
