First Indian ISS Astronaut Shukla Reaches 113 Orbits, Leads Research and Student Outreach

Shukla’s on-orbit research positions India for Gaganyaan by pairing seven India-led experiments with immersive student engagement.

Overview

  • Since docking on June 26, Shukla has completed over 113 Earth orbits and observed his first crew rest day on July 3.
  • He is conducting seven India-sponsored experiments and contributing to more than 60 global studies aimed at advancing microgravity science.
  • NASA reports he is developing a brain-computer interface in the ISS orbital lab to test neurotechnology applications in microgravity.
  • Under ISRO’s Vidyarthi Samvad Programme, he has held live video conferences and a ham-radio session with students in Uttar Pradesh and Kerala, with a second radio talk planned for July 8.
  • His mission findings will directly inform ISRO’s upcoming Gaganyaan human spaceflight as he prepares for his scheduled return on July 10.
