First Human West Nile Cases of the Season Confirmed in Connecticut, Long Island and Trumbull County

Widespread positive mosquito tests signal ongoing seasonal risk through the fall.

Overview

  • Connecticut reported its first human infection this year in a Fairfield County man in his 40s who tested positive in late August and has recovered.
  • Suffolk County confirmed Long Island’s first case in a Huntington resident under 50 who developed symptoms in mid-August, was hospitalized, and is recovering at home.
  • The Ohio Department of Health confirmed Trumbull County’s first human case after a local mosquito sample tested positive earlier this month.
  • State surveillance found West Nile virus in mosquitoes from 26 Connecticut towns, and separate testing detected Eastern Equine Encephalitis in three towns.
  • Health officials urge EPA-registered repellents, protective clothing, limiting dusk and dawn exposure, and removing standing water, noting most infections are asymptomatic but severe illness risk rises with age or weakened immunity.
