Overview

  • The USS F-1, a World War I-era submarine that sank in 1917 after a collision, has been visually documented for the first time using cutting-edge deep-sea technology.
  • The wreck, located over 1,300 feet underwater off San Diego, had been known only through sonar readings since its discovery in 1975.
  • An interagency team led by Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and Naval History and Heritage Command used submersibles, drones, and photogrammetry to create detailed 3-D models of the wreck.
  • In addition to the USS F-1, the expedition surveyed a WWII-era Grumman TBM Avenger torpedo bomber, capturing images of its damaged tail and bent propeller.
  • The mission concluded with a remembrance ceremony aboard the research vessel Atlantis, honoring the 19 sailors who lost their lives in the USS F-1 tragedy.
