First-Ever Drive from North to South Pole Completed in Electric Car
Scottish couple Chris and Julie Ramsey conquer polar extremes in a solar and wind-powered Nissan Ariya, marking a milestone in electric vehicle expeditions.
- Scottish couple Chris and Julie Ramsey have completed the first-ever drive from the Magnetic North Pole to the South Pole in an electric car, a modified Nissan Ariya named 'Sonrisa'.
- The journey covered over 18,000 miles and took nine months, starting in March and ending in December. The couple faced various challenges, including frozen landscapes, challenging road conditions, and encounters with polar bears.
- The car was powered primarily by solar and wind energy, with the couple using a 5kW wind turbine or a prototype solar hybrid charging solution to charge their Ariya. In some instances, they had to use a petrol generator.
- The couple collaborated with EV charging solutions provider, Enel X Way, to install chargers along their route through Central and South America, particularly in Peru. These chargers will remain available to the public, extending the electric Pan-American charging corridor.
- This is not the first time the Ramseys have made headlines with electric vehicles. In 2017, they became the first to enter and complete the Mongol Rally in an electric car.
